Mali started the stronger of the teams with a back-heel pass from Moussa Marega that found Hamari Traore blasted over.
Marega himself twice came close before the break as Ivory Coast struggled to get a foothold.
The Elephants improved after the break, though, and should have taken the lead 67 minutes in when Jonathan Kodjia could only find the side-netting after goalkeeper Djigui Diarra had slipped.

Zaha opened the scoring nine minutes later with a fine finish past Diarra.
The Elephants will now face Algeria in the quarter finals.
