Yes I dropped the hints and he was just clueless, and it happened just last week. I was food shopping at my local grocery store and on a couple of occasions, I will run into a guy that I had a HUGE crush on when I was in Junior High School (as it was called back then).
The first time I saw Jim, was during summer break. It was so hot, humid and the heat was so oppressive to be outside, but playing kick ball with my neighbors was something we all did for fun on summer evenings!
Suddenly I heard him ask if he could join in the game. Jim was a tall, slender young man who was fast on his feet and had a quick wit! I could tell he had played kickball before! For almost two hours we played in the street in front of my neighbors house until I heard their dad calling them back inside.
That left me all alone with Jim. I was 13 and he was 15. We stood there, all alone under the lamp post…we looked at each other, but we didn’t speak. We were both a hot mess! Did I care? No. Did he care? I don’t know. I was kinda shy and wanted to make some excuse to go home, but I didn’t want to go.
So, I just stood there, hoping he would walk over to me, wipe my sweaty face a little, and give me a kiss. But he didn’t do that. Instead he said, “It’s been fun! We need to do this again sometime!” Then off he went, back to his house. I was a little disappointed, but felt confident I would see him again.
But I didn’t…
Then, after nearly 40 years …..I ran into him at my local grocery store. The years had been good to him, I might add. He recognized me immediately, and right there between the produce section and the fruit juices, we talked for about half an hour catching up on our lives.
I learned that he worked as a designer, was still single and no children, I brought him up to date on my life and like him, happily single and stay busy with various activities. Then all of a sudden he said to me, “I have always wanted to date you and told my mother about you and she said, son, what are you waiting for? “ To which I replied, “Well….here’s your chance!”
So what did he do?
Nothing…..it was an awkward silence…
Then he replied, “Well, it’s been fun catching up and I hope you enjoy the rest of your day…this seems to be our meeting place…hahahaha!”
