God demands Holiness – What is Holiness? It is not the absence of sin but the pursuit of Godliness therefore when someone is holy, what it means is that the person exhibits the nature of God among men.
Holiness is therefore not an instant action but a development process which allows man to change from one state to another. Anyone that God calls in addition to what he is sent to do for God is given the mandate to be holy.
Moses was told to remove his sandal because the ground is holy (Exodus 3:5). Abraham was told to come out of his people and his kindred before God can do what he wants with (Genesis 12).
The just, Righteous and Holy
Just is pursuit of right living among men.
Righteousness is a right standing before God which is mostly conferred by God on men.
A man is righteous when God accepts that man to stand before him. This implies that righteousness is not what a man does but what God does for man
Genesis 15:6 Abraham was credited with righteousness 1 Corinthians 1:30 accounts Jesus as our righteousness.
Holiness is a state of being. A lifestyle which defines a person. Holiness is what a person is known for
Holiness therefore is a righteous person living a just life among men. It is an acceptable life before God and men at the same time.
After Adam and Eve had disobeyed (taken the form or state) of Satan, God could no longer live with them so He drove them away from his presence – Genesis 3.
Adam and Eve had become different from God. They were dead to God.
Demand for Holiness in the Bible
Ecclesiastics 9:8 Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.
Psalms 1:5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
Psalms 15:1-3 LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.
1 Peter 1:15-16 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation. Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
God demands Holiness and as servants and worshippers of God, that is what we must offer.
Dear LORD, teach me to understand your words and to live a life acceptable unto you according to your words.
