Africa Cup of Nations debutants Madagascar produced another upset to beat DR Congo 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw and seal a quarter-final spot.

Barea surprised many to win their group with victories over Nigeria and Burundi – while the Leopards finished as one of the best third place finishers to progress.

Faneva Andriatsima gave his team the lead with a header in the 77th minute before Chancel Mbemba’s 90th-minute equalizer forced extra-time.

Before DR Congo’s equalizer, they were denied a penalty in controversial circumstances when Britt Assombalonga appeared to be fouled by Thomas Fontaine.

Madagascar Tops in the Spot Kicks

The Indian Ocean Islanders came out on top in the shoot-out after neither side scored again in extra time, Marcel Tisserand and Everton winger Yannick Bolasie both blasting over.
