Country Coupling: An article of two countries you can combine in one trip. Take two for the price of (almost) one.
Country coupling is the art of combining two opposite countries into one vacation is nothing new. But it’s going to take off even more this year. I wrote about it in my blog post on travel trends for 2020.
The idea of country coupling is – instead of experiencing one country, you can add on a second nearby country – but you’re not adding it on for adding sake – you’re adding one that offers something different from the first.
So let me give you some ideas. That’s why I’m really here.
1.) KENYA + TANZANIA
From a distance, both can seem very similar but they each have their strong points. Tanzania’s beaches >>> Kenya’s beaches. Both have Safaris but Kenyan safaris are untouchable.
Start with a Kenyan Safari, end your trip by the beach in Tanzania.
2.) INDIA + SRI LANKA
You can begin your trip in the heart of India – taking in the sights and sounds of Delhi and Jaipur. It’s fast paced and busy. But then you can slow things down in Sri Lanka and enjoy nature. Catch a < $100 non-stop flight from New Delhi to Colombo.
3.) GUATEMALA + BELIZE
Fun fact: Guatemala and Belize share a border. It’s extremely easy to see both countries on one trip. Visit Guatemala for the Mayan ruins, colorful markets and amazing scenery. End your trip snorkeling in Belize.
4.) EGYPT + JORDAN
Both countries are standalone countries in their own right but their proximity to each other allows for travelers to see both of them affordably.
See the pyramids in Egypt, camp out at the desert in Wadi Rum, Jordan. Why not?
5.) PERU + BRAZIL
Peru is easily one of my favorite countries ever. The culture – food, people – provides for great sensory stimulation. You can combine an adventure to Peru with an adventure to Brazil. Both beautiful but wildly different places. Round trip tickets for ~ $200.
6.) SPAIN + MOROCCO
For beautiful architecture and mouth watery cuisine, visit Spain. You can see cities like Valencia, Barcelona or Malaga. Make sure to have some Paella. And then add on a trip to Morocco for less than $200. Stay in a Riad in Marrakech, explore night souks.
7.) SINGAPORE + VIETNAM
With round trip tickets costing less than $100 and direct routes to both countries, it makes sense. Singapore is technologically advanced, Vietnam is slower paced and more “natural”. Go from riding cable cars in Singapore to basket boats in Vietnam.
8.) SOUTH AFRICA + NAMIBIA
Non-stop Capetown to Windhoek flights make both very compatible. Explore the colorful Bo-kaap neighborhood, table mountain, bunders beach, etc. And then head over to the desert in Namibia. Or the other way round. Your choice!
9.) USA + MEXICO
A classic – am I right? Of course there are several cities so pick wisely. New York + Cancun. Check. (From city life to beach life.)
Miami + Mexico City. Check.
My final suggestion.
10.) GREECE + ITALY
Both countries are beautiful but offer very different experiences. Parts of Italy are walking cities w/ great architecture and food. Parts of Greece (Santorini for example) are a bit more laid back with views. Rome to Santorini < $100
Before I go. Keep in mind:
1.) You may need to get visas for both countries so check.
2.) You don’t always have to add a second country – it’s just a great idea to maximize your time and make the most of your vacation.
3.) The more different the countries, the better!
Hope this gives you some ideas for next time.
