1-On-1 With Dancehall Artiste Goon Maan

Dancehall; a fast growing music genre outside its origin of Jamaica in countries across the globe and one man making waves with it in Germany is Goon Maan.

Goon blends the dancehall genre with the African inspired tunes of Afrobeats to create an amazing and beautiful symphony you would fall in love with.

The AFROSAGES team sat down with the Ghanaian Afrobeats/Dancehall artiste based in Germany; Goon Maan to have a tête-à-tête.

AFROSAGES: Tell us a little bit about yourself.

GM: My government name is Asante Kwabena popularly known as Goon Maan, the Dancehall Afrobeats General, leader of the Goon Nation. I was born on the 1st of January, 1989 in Kumasi, and later relocated to Germany at the age of 14.

AFROSAGES: When did music start for you?

GM: My musical talent, not long to be hidden, showed itself at the age of 15. I started out as a rapper.

AFROSAGES: Wow, that’s interesting. Then why dancehall?

GM: I fell in love with Patois the first time I heard it. So I started following the Jamaican music industry and studied the language (Patois). I wanted to develop myself as a dancehall performer.

AFROSAGES: How has that help your music career?

GM: Over the years, I have made a name for myself in the German music world, where I have performed my songs at several events and functions.

AFROSAGES: Which shows have you performed at?

GM: I have performed alongside some big names in the industry, some highlights being Consum Düsseldorf in 2007, where I performed my first ever song, ‘Bad Gyal’, at the Beenie Man Show. I also performed again at the Kcee and Bracket show in Essen, Germany.

In 2015, I performed at Shatta Wale’s German tour in Hamburg.

AFROSAGES: What or who inspires you?

GM: I get my inspiration from artists such as Vybes Kartel, Beenie Man, Sizzla Kolongi, Elephant Man, Ninja Man and Bounty Killa, Samini, just to name a few.

AFROSAGES: Have you done songs with Ghanaian artistes?

GM: Yes I have. I have a song with Bisa Kdei titled “Obaa Hemaa” and one with MTN Hitmaker winner Kurls Songx titled “Fa Wo La”
